The litter box is where most cat-owner friction starts, and almost all of it comes down to three variables: size, location and how often it is cleaned.
A box should be roughly one and a half times the length of your cat, nose to tail base. Covered boxes control odour and mess but trap smell inside, and some cats refuse them — if yours does, an open or high-sided box usually solves it. High sides also stop the sideways spray that cats produce when they urinate against a wall, which is the usual cause of litter on the floor. For two cats, the accepted guidance is one box each plus one spare.
Options below include the high-sided stainless steel box and the large-aperture litter scoop.
