Scratching posts, pads and boards

Scratching is not a behaviour problem — it is maintenance. Cats scratch to shed the outer layer of their claws, to stretch, and to mark territory. Giving them a legitimate target is the single most effective way to protect a sofa.

Material matters more than shape. Sisal rope and corrugated cardboard both take claws well and shed cleanly; carpet-wrapped posts feel good for a few weeks and then fray. Height matters too: a cat that cannot stretch fully upright will go back to the sofa arm, so look for a post tall enough to scratch with front paws extended overhead.

  • Vertical posts for stretching, flat pads for horizontal scratching.
  • Cardboard pads are cheap to replace — a good first purchase.
  • Place a scratcher next to whatever the cat is already damaging.
  • Replace the pad, not the whole unit.

Popular choices include the cardboard scratch board and the foldable accordion scratcher. If your cat prefers climbing to scratching, see trees and towers.
