Scratching is not a behaviour problem — it is maintenance. Cats scratch to shed the outer layer of their claws, to stretch, and to mark territory. Giving them a legitimate target is the single most effective way to protect a sofa.
Material matters more than shape. Sisal rope and corrugated cardboard both take claws well and shed cleanly; carpet-wrapped posts feel good for a few weeks and then fray. Height matters too: a cat that cannot stretch fully upright will go back to the sofa arm, so look for a post tall enough to scratch with front paws extended overhead.
Popular choices include the cardboard scratch board and the foldable accordion scratcher. If your cat prefers climbing to scratching, see trees and towers.
