Carriers, harnesses and collars

Travel gear is bought in a hurry and regretted later, so it is worth getting right. The two things that matter most are a carrier your cat will actually enter without a fight, and a collar that releases if it snags.

For carriers, a top-loading design is much easier than a front-loading one when you are trying to lower a reluctant cat in, and a carrier that opens at the top also lets the cat stay inside it at the vet rather than being tipped out. Leave the carrier out at home with a blanket in it so it is not only associated with the car. For collars, a breakaway clasp is the safe default: if the collar catches on a branch or a radiator, it opens instead of choking. Harnesses take a few short indoor sessions to get used to before they are reliable outdoors.
